Obituary for Calvin A. Bowen

Longtime Alaskan and Soldotna resident Calvin Asa Bowen, 69, passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 at Alaska Regional Medical Center from complications of multiple health issues.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at the Soldotna Church of Christ. Tony Cloud will officiate. Military honors will follow the services at the church.
Calvin was born Jan. 18, 1949 in Farmington, Maine. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968-72, serving in Ft. Yukon, AK during the Vietnam War as an early warning radar operator. After his honorable discharge he became a certified aircraft dispatcher and a commercial motor coach driver, instructor and tour guide. Before moving to Alaska, he had worked at Lockheed in California, Ryan Aviation in Kansas and American Trans Air in Indiana. He moved to Alaska in January 1991 and lived in Anchorage, Nikiski, Kenai and Soldotna. He worked for Laidlaw, South Central Air, Northern Air Cargo, Evergreen Airlines and Mark Air. He retired in 2011 from Holland America West Coast Tours.
Calvin was a member of the Church of Christ. He volunteered at UAA’s KRUA radio station, where he hosted and produced the “American Celtic Radio Show.” He enjoyed music, hiking, backpacking and photography.
His son wrote, “I just want to take a minute and say a few things, Calvin Asa Bowen was a Loving Father, Husband and a friend to all around him. Even though he put on a smile for everyone he suffered from diabetes and Parkinson's, but he never let that stop him from living his life, He worked in the Air force and traveled around the world, moved on to aviation after he left the military. and eventually found his passion in being a professional motor coach operator, exceeding beyond standards and became the top instructor of his time. But he would not stop there and went on to host his own Celtic radio show, I even had the honor to co-host with him on one of his slots and that would end up one of his favorite episodes he did. Sadly, on January 28th he passed away. I will never stop missing you Dad and I will make sure your grandchildren will know how great of a father you were. Till we meet again, Love you Dad.”
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, Asa and Edith Bowen, a half-brother, Ted Bowen and an adopted brother, Bobby.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 36 years, Brenda Bowen of Soldotna; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey of Ft. Worth, Texas, Matthew of Yokosuka, Japan, and Patrick and Denise Bowen of Virginia Beach, Va., and Vincent of Gulfport, Ms.; daughters, Rachael and Colleen, both of Soldotna; grandson, Xavier of Virginia Beach, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Roland and Lynn Bowen of California; and a sister-in-law, Carla Bowen of Delonega, Ga.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
