Obituary for James H. "Dick" Weaver

Longtime Alaskan James H. “Dick” Weaver, 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna with his wife by his side holding his hand.
Viewing will be from 12-2 p.m. Friday at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Hwy. Burial will follow the viewing at the Kenai City Cemetery. A potluck and celebration of his life will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Kenai Senior Center. Pastor Talakai Finau will officiate.
Dick was born June 7, 1928 in Wortham, Texas to Ollie and Lottie (Garrett) Weaver. He served in the U.S. Army from 1947-1949, serving one year in Italy at the end of World War II. He made the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in March 2014 to honor his service in World War II. He farmed in Texas and New Mexico for 16 years. He moved to Alaska in 1969 and worked on the platforms in Cook Inlet, retiring from Unocal when he turned 65.
His family wrote, “He loved the Lord and was a Deacon at Mt. Redoubt Baptist Church. He also volunteered at the Mission and was a regular at the Nikiski and Kenai Senior Centers. He enjoyed playing and singing at the lunches at the Senior Centers. He loved playing and singing his music, and he also played many different stringed instruments.”
Dick was preceded in death by his first wife, Pat Weaver, grandsons, Justin and Wayne Weaver, sister, Lavern Monday and a brother, William Weaver.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Ruth Weaver; sons, Derrill Weaver, and his wife Patty, Rusty Weaver, and Alan Weaver and his wife, Nan; daughters, Sherry Soares and husband, Cliff, and Tanna Chenault and husband, Mike; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; stepchildren Rebecca Matthews, Michael and Stephen Atkins; brother and sister-in-law, Butch and Kay Butler; nephew, Mac Butler; and extended family, Rob white and Rebecca Hanson.
Rather than flowers, the family prefers memorial donations to a music program at a local school or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
